Things I’ve Written
(the published ones)
Note: all links below are pre-2021. My most up-to-date writing is copywriting for The Cast Iron Group & copyediting for various side projects. As time enables us to be, I believe I am a better writer than I once was, but will list some favorites below. If links are broken that means my heart is broken, as it suggests folks aren’t buying enough subscriptions to keep stories online.
Bylines: The Daily Dispatch, Indy Week, News of Orange County, Mebane Enterprise, Forty Eighty-Five Magazine, The Appalachian Voice, The Watauga Democrat, The Appalachian
On Writing:
While I enjoyed news reporting, I was more in love with the newsrooms I was a part of – remnants of locally-owned newspapers and publications. They were once the heartbeats of their communities, yet now are fading from downtown street corners and the publics’ mind. I cherished being a part of these places; in just five years’ time, one has merged with the other to become one (until it becomes none), the daily newspaper is now 6 (maybe 5?) days a week, and a biweekly student print publication cut paper and went virtual.
My journalism experience was a service as the voice on local rumblings, the informer of the hard-hitting and not-so-hard-hitting news, the familiar face at the local Brunswick stew gathering, or high school football game. These stories were and are important, no matter how trivial they may seem: little league baseball, the cemetery of oldest church in town, a new business downtown, or the annual holiday parade hold special places in our hearts, and they used to in print.
